7 common mistakes in your network architecture (and how to avoid them)

A Wi-Fi network that keeps cutting out during a Teams meeting. Files opening at a snail's pace. Employees constantly asking why the internet is “so slow again”. Sound familiar?

When companies experience problems with their network, Wi-Fi often gets the blame. However, the real cause usually lies a lot deeper. In many cases, it's not the Wi-Fi that's the problem, but rather the way the entire corporate network has been constructed.

In this blog, we'll discuss seven mistakes we regularly see organisations make. Perhaps you’ll recognise a few within your own IT network.

Your network has grown organically

We see it happening often: a company starts with a simple network setup that perfectly matches its needs at that moment. But as the organisation grows, so does the network.

New employees are joining, extra meeting rooms are getting Wi-Fi, an additional branch is being connected, or cloud applications, cameras, and IoT devices are being added. On their own, these are all logical extensions. However, little thought is given to how all these changes affect the entire network together. This is how a network gradually emerges, composed of different puzzle pieces.

The consequence?

  • different generations of hardware
  • complex configurations
  • more chance of disruptions
  • Difficult management

A thoughtful network architecture does not start from individual components, but from a single clear design where performance, security, and scalability come together.

2. Resolving poor WiFi coverage with extra access points

When the Wi-Fi signal weakens somewhere, the first reflex is often to install an extra access point. This seems logical, but it often has the opposite effect. Access points that are too close together can interfere with each other. Furthermore, users sometimes remain connected to a more distant access point, while a stronger signal is available nearby. The result is a slower and less stable connection.

A good Wi-Fi network therefore doesn't start with extra hardware, but with a solid design. Through a professional Wi-Fi survey, we map out factors such as coverage, capacity, and potential sources of interference. Based on this, we determine how many access points are needed and where they should best be placed. This way, you get much more out of your existing Infrastructurer.

3. Everything is on the same network

Printers, cameras, visitors, laptops, smartphones, production machines…

In many organisations, all these devices share the same network. This seems simple, but it carries various risks:

  • Network performance is suffering because all devices share the same capacity.
  • A greater security risk, as devices are not separated from one another.
  • Greater impact during outages, where one problem affects multiple users or systems.
  • More complex network management, making it harder to detect problems.

This is why more and more organisations are opting for network segmentation. By logically separating different types of devices from each other via VLANs or separate networks, you not only increase security but also often improve the performance of the entire business network.

4. Your network isn't growing with your organisation

Ten years ago, the majority of network traffic was local. Today, that looks completely different.

Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, cloud applications, AI tools such as Copilot Hybrid working means there is a lot more traffic on the network than before.

The demands we place on a business network today are much higher than they were a few years ago. A network that was sufficient then is therefore not always suitable for the current working environment.

This is why it is important to regularly evaluate whether your network infrastructure still meets your organisation's needs.

5. Outdated hardware remains in use for too long

Network equipment has a long lifespan. This is an advantage, but it also means that switches or access points sometimes run for years without anyone looking at them.

However, outdated hardware carries several disadvantages:

  • Downturn in network performance due to hardware not optimally supporting modern applications.
  • A greater chance of malfunctions and unexpected downtime.
  • More security risks when updates and support are discontinued.
  • Less future-proofing, making it harder to implement new technologies.

Upgrading your network doesn't always mean a complete replacement. Often, a targeted modernisation can already deliver a huge improvement.

6. No IT network monitoring

In many organisations, network problems are only noticed when employees start experiencing issues. However, a modern network should signal potential problems before users are affected.

With a modern network management platform, you'll gain continuous insight into your network's health. You'll see which access points are heavily loaded, where faults are occurring, and which devices are using a considerable amount of bandwidth.

This often allows problems to be resolved before employees even experience them. This not only saves time but also prevents frustrations on the shop floor.

7. Security will only be added afterwards

A modern business network must not only be fast and reliable, but also secure. Yet, security is still too often seen as an afterthought. First, the network has to work, then we'll look at it. security.

In reality, both belong together from the start. A modern network architecture takes into account access control, network segmentation, guest networks, monitoring and secure connections between locations. This not only reduces the risk of cyber incidents, but also builds a network that is ready for the future.
